Art Therapy

The mention of Art Therapy seems to always bring a smile and a look of intrigue to people’s faces. Those who have encountered it before share their experience with it, the others ask for more information. Art therapy is an established mental health profession that uses the creative process of art making as well as models of counseling and psychotherapy to improve and enhance an individual’s physical, mental, and emotional well-being. The art making process encourages people to express and understand their thoughts and feelings. Contrary to popular belief, you don’t have to be an artist to do art therapy, and it isn’t only for kids. Yes, children seem born to create art and so are great candidates to benefit from this therapy, but think about it, somewhere, all but hidden in a hesitant adult, is that child artist awakened by the smell of crayons. Art Therapy has the uncanny ability to draw out of us what we need to know, feel and understand about ourselves and the world around us. It can sooth our soul, uplift our spirit, communicate our feeling, connect us as family or community, unearth our nightmares and dreams, help us face our fears, uplift our heart and bring us joy. There are two main thoughts surrounding the use of art in therapy, one that the creative process itself is healing and therapeutic, sometimes referred to as art as therapy. The other that well being is achieved through art making, therapeutic interaction and interpretation. This is known as art psychotherapy. In reality, I believe both views are valid. As a professional art therapist I believe in the power of contact, context and relationship; of someone witnessing our discovery and process. This witnessing and dialog validate our journey; give us confidence, strength and self esteem. I have also utilized art making by itself and have encouraged others to do the same. Sometimes we need to help ourselves outside the bounds of formal therapy.

Acu-Detox

Acupuncture is a therapy developed by the ancient Chinese that has been used successfully for 5,000 years to treat a variety of illnesses and is now used worldwide. It works by stimulating designated points on the body via insertion of very fine acupuncture needles. Acupuncture’s goal is to encourage the patient’s body to heal, repair and restore its own natural balance. Acu-Detox is derived from auriculotherapy, a health care modality where acupuncture needles stimulate only the external surface of the ear. Acu-Detox is a deceptively simple protocol developed in 1974 at New York City’s Lincoln Hospital in the South Bronx for use with heroin addicts. The five points utilized for this protocol have been chosen because they have an effect on the organs and the emotions that are most stressed and in need of attention. Acu-Detox has fast emerged as an important adjunctive therapy in addictions treatment as well as within HIV/AIDS clinics, prisons, and mental health facilities. Taken enough times it helps clear the mind, build energy, promote relaxation and a sense of wellbeing.

Jin Shin Jyutsu

Physical Health issues usually bring someone to Jin Shin Jyutsu, often after exhausting other treatment recommendations. Similar to acupuncture without the use of needles, Jin Shin Jyutsu® known as the art of happiness brings balance to the body’s energies and facilitates our own profound healing capacity. It is a gentle art, practiced by placing fingertips over clothing on designated points, to harmonize and restore the energy flow, inducing relaxation and reducing the effects of daily stress. Jin Shin is a wonderful complement to traditional treatment methods. It offers immediate stress reduction benefits. It can be applied as self-help and also by a trained practitioner. It does not involve massage, manipulation of muscles, or use of drugs or substances. Issues such as sinus congestion, insomnia, migraines, hormonal imbalances, blood pressure, headaches, allergies, and asthma readily respond to Jin Shin Jyutsu sessions. Chronic illnesses and pain can be resolved as well. Jin Shin Jyutsu will boost the immune system and help in the prevention of colds and flu. Once you get to know Jin Shin Jyutsu, you will find that it not only helps your physical health but that it soothes the mind, balances emotions and uplifts the spirit.
